Walt Disney World is in the midst of the longest park closure in the company’s history. So far, the theme parks have been closed since March 16, 2020, and will remain closed until further notice.

Disney is allowed to submit a plan for re-opening to the State of Florida. That plan should include a proposed opening date. Competitor, Universal Studios has submitted its proposal and has requested an opening date of June 5.

Walt Disney World is allowing guests to book reservations for dates in July 2020 and beyond. However, no resort or theme park reopening dates have been set. Be prepared to change or cancel reservations made this summer if a reopening plan is not established.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a reopening date for the rest of Disney but it’s interesting to watch the reopening plan for Shanghai Disneyland. It certainly gives us clues as to what may come stateside this year and next.

Good Morning America (which is owned by Disney), announced that the “theme park in China will reopen its gates with added safety measures to keep visitors and cast members at the park safe” on Monday, May 11, 2020.

At Shanghai Disneyland, park capacity will be limited to 24,000 guests, which is 30% of the park’s normal capacity (UPDATE: Disney decided to let thousands less enter on Day 1). Entrance into the park will require an advance reservation (tickets for Day 1 sold out in minutes). All employees and guests will be required to wear masks and submit to a temperature check. Social distancing will be enforced and there will be increased cleaning of the park, especially high traffic areas.

Shanghai Disney has been closed since January 25, 2020—a total of 107 days by the time it reopens. On May 11, Walt Disney World stands at 57 days of closure.  Closure until the end of June would equal 109 days for the Florida park.

The reopening of Walt Disney World isn’t entirely up to the company. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis implemented Phase I of a recovery plan for the state on May 4, 2020. Phase 1 requires that theme parks remain closed. Phase 2 will allow theme parks to consider re-opening with capacity limits, strict social distancing, and proper measures to clean and disinfect (requirements similar to those set in Shanghai). No date for Phase 2 implementation has been decided as of May 9, 2020.
