Primo Eats: Loaded Tots

I credit 2004’s Napoleon Dynamite for reigniting America’s love of tater tots. These crispy potato barrels are popping up in movie theaters and bars everywhere. Theme parks are no exception.

At Disney, we got a tot fix recently at The Friar’s Nook, located in the Magic Kingdom’s Fantasyland. The Friar’s Nook offers three smothered tater tot offerings that are pretty substantial. The basic is the Pub Tots. Just melted cheese, chopped bacon, and scallions for $8.50. The Loaded Buffalo Tots are smothering in Buffalo chicken and garlic ranch with a sprinkle of blue cheese and chopped celery on top for $9.50. The Fiesta Tots are covered in beef chili and queso and sprinkled with tomatoes and jalapenos, also $9.50.

When I say the portions are substantial, I mean it. One bowl was enough for two grownups and two young kids to share as a snack. As a meal for one, I’m pretty sure most people would find themselves stuffed.

Grumpy Dad was reluctant to try the tots. To him, they looked like a heart attack in a bowl. However, after one bite, I couldn’t keep him away.

The key is getting tots that are extra crispy so that the melted cheese doesn’t turn the whole dish to mush. The Friar’s Nook tots are fried, which gives them the crunch they need to withstand all the toppings. Having lots of cheese also makes a difference. If you don’t get enough, you’ll be left with naked tots at the end. Luckily for us, the jolly cast members at The Friar’s Nook were quite generous to us. We actually ran out of tots before running out of toppings.

A few other Disney locations offer loaded tots that we did not have a chance to try on our last trip. Let us know in the comments if you have, and what you think.

Woody’s Lunch Box at Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios offers “Totchos” for $9. These are like nachos, but with a base of tots rather than tortilla chips. Toppings are beef and bean chili, shredded cheese, queso, tomatoes, corn chips, sour cream, and green onion.

River Roost Lounge at The Port Orleans Riverside Resort sells Loaded Potato Puffs for $11. They are topped with pulled pork, beer cheese, and Pico de Gallo.

ESPN Club on the Boardwalk sells Loaded Tots for $12. These tots are covered in brisket, beer cheese, caramelized onions, and Pico de Gallo.

Off course if you just love plain old tots. You can find them in many breakfast locations, both quick service and buffets. Load ‘em up yourself and create your own Disney Tot Magic.
